Mathematical description of concentric demyelination in the human brain: Self-organization models, from Liesegang rings to chemotaxis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Baló’s concentric sclerosis (BCS) is an atypical variant of multiple sclerosis (MS) characterized by remarkable concentric demyelination patterns in the white matter of the brain and in the spinal chord. In Khonsari and Calvez (2006), we introduced a very simple model based on cellular self-organization, which reproduced quite accurately the quantitative and qualitative aspects of this disease. The present paper provides more details on the mathematical framework underlying our precedent work. We first review the basics of the chemotaxis aggregation principle and the modeling of the Liesegang rings (LR) phenomenon. We then present our local macrophages recruitment model, which derives from the reconsideration of the classical analogy between LR and BCS. This new model provides several non-obvious insights, such as the link between the level of aggressivity of the disease and the emergence of patterns. c © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The Origins of Concentric Demyelination: Self-Organization in the Human Brain
Baló's concentric sclerosis is a rare atypical form of multiple sclerosis characterized by striking concentric demyelination patterns. We propose a robust mathematical model for Baló's sclerosis, sharing common molecular and cellular mechanisms with multiple sclerosis. A reconsideration of the analogies between Baló's sclerosis and the Liesegang periodic precipitation phenomenon led us to propo...
متن کاملLiesegang Rings in Xanthogranulomatous Pyelonephritis: A Case Report
Liesegang rings are concentric noncellular lamellar structures, rarely seen in vivo, occurring as a consequence of the accumulation of insoluble products in a colloidal matrix. These characteristic structures are a rare phenomenon usually found in association with cystic or inflammatory lesions and may be mistaken for parasites. The authors examined Liesegang rings from an inflammatory kidney l...
متن کاملLiesegang rings: The misnomer in calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor?
Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor which is characterized by the presence of islands and sheets of epithelial cells, amyloid like material and calcifications. These calcifications have a concentric lamellar pattern because of which they have been known by some as liesegang rings. However, classic liesegang rings seen in other extragnathic sit...
متن کاملComparison of models and lattice-gas simulations for Liesegang patterns
For more than a century Liesegang patterns – self-organized, quasiperiodic structures occurring in diffusion-limited chemical reactions with two components – have been attracting scientists. The pattern formation can be described by four basic empirical laws. In addition to many experiments, several models have been devised to understand the formation of the bands and rings. Here we review the ...
متن کاملSelf-Organization in Biological Systems
This book deals with self-organization in biological systems and constitutes a much-needed supplement to the mainstream treatment of behavioural ecology by Krebs & Davies (1997). In combination with Termites, Turtles and Traffic Jams by Michel Resnick (1994), it is an excellent textbook for courses on self-organized biological and social systems. In an admirable way it combines detailed experim...
